The concept of a short stroke (2.5 mm) is effective in realistic black and white tattoos. When making this type of tattoo, in fact, it’s primarily used water, with only a minimal percentage of diluted ink in it. Therefore it is unnecessary to “push” a dense pigment under the skin, penetration may be reduced, permitting layering, as in a pencil drawing, without irritating the skin too much, allowing faster and better healing. A shorter excursion also considerably improves the detailed works with fine round needles (shader and liner). In fact, reduced excursion decreases penetration power and distance between spots, permitting detailed work with a reduced number of passes, thereby preventing the risk of overworking or short-term expansion of the pigmented area, which can cause the unpleasant effect of details that appear opaque and is no longer clear and defined.
